What should I check before and during a Phu Quoc trip?
TRAVEL INFORMATION
The first useful test is small: turn off Wi-Fi, send the hotel a message and open the saved entrance pin. If that works, you can enjoy the island. If it does not, fix it while you are still beside the person who sold or installed the connection.
Choose a plan for the actual phone and trip length, not just the biggest data number. Confirm whether it includes a Vietnamese number and calls, register it correctly and test mobile data after activation. Keep hotel, pickup and ticket details offline for the parts of the island where a connection may fail.
A practical decision
Choose by the calls you need as well as the data.
Roaming keeps the familiar line and can be convenient for a short stay if the home network’s Vietnam terms fit. A local SIM or eSIM can give domestic service, while a travel eSIM may be data-only. Messaging over data is different from receiving a bank SMS or making a normal call to reception. Decide which of those jobs matters before replacing the home line or paying for a package.
Viettel, MobiFone and VinaPhone are established local names, not a verified ranking for every Phú Quốc beach. A traveller staying around Dương Đông has a different use pattern from someone working from a quiet eastern bungalow or spending days offshore. Ask about the actual location, but do not treat a seller’s strongest-network claim as a measurement of the room or island route you will use.
An unlocked compatible model and a clear activation instruction matter more than a QR code alone.
Check the exact model and regional variant for eSIM support, and whether the phone is locked to its original carrier. Apple’s travel guidance explains that another carrier’s service needs an unlocked compatible iPhone. Android models also need their own specification checked. A salesperson calling a package eSIM-ready cannot change the hardware or a carrier lock.
Install using a reliable connection, label the lines clearly and choose which one supplies mobile data. Follow the purchased plan’s roaming instruction; some travel data profiles need it, while the home line can incur separate roaming charges. Keep the home number available for the verification you actually need without letting it silently become the data connection. Do not delete a working eSIM merely to troubleshoot before checking whether it can be reinstalled.
Keep the receipt, actual network name and support instruction.
At Phu Quoc International Airport or in Duong Dong, use an identifiable carrier or authorised sales channel. Bring the original passport for a foreign visitor’s registration and follow the carrier’s actual identification process. Viettel’s tourist channel asks for passport details and images. Do not send passport photographs to an unverified messaging account simply because it offers a cheap package.
Before leaving, turn Wi-Fi off and load a page or map. Try the ordinary call or SMS feature if that was part of the purchase. Record the number, package validity, data allowance, top-up method and support contact. A plan described as unlimited may still have a high-speed allowance or other limits. Ask what happens when that allowance is used, and whether hotspot use fits the package if a laptop or another person depends on it.
Use the carrier’s own registration and activation steps, not a universal code for every SIM.
MobiFone’s 18 March 2026 announcement describes Hi Vietnam registration with passport images, identity verification and eSIM installation, followed by calling 900 to activate. That call belongs to this service’s process; it is not a rule for every Viettel, VinaPhone or overseas data eSIM. If registration does not complete, a downloaded profile alone is not a working connection.
The same announcement lists HVN7 at 120,000 VND for seven days with 50 GB and 70 domestic-call minutes. This is a dated carrier offer to compare against the current purchase screen, not our network recommendation or a free service for the whole holiday. Read the validity and allowances before paying. A domestic visitor with an existing line may simply need a suitable current data package rather than any tourist product.
A good mobile signal and a stable hotel Wi-Fi connection are separate things.
Ask the accommodation about the work location, then test there rather than only at reception. Video calls, uploads and a laptop hotspot use a connection differently from checking a restaurant pin. For a meeting that matters, keep an independent connection and power backup. Do not promise a client uninterrupted island internet on the strength of a speed screenshot supplied by another guest.
A quiet coast can be a lovely place to stay without being the right place for an important video call. Save maps, bookings and contact details before a forest route, remote beach or boat day. If work depends on a particular upload or call, test the connection in the actual room and arrange a backup before committing to that base.
Offline maps work best alongside the booking and a written pickup instruction.
Save the hotel name, road entrance, contact, tickets and pickup message before leaving a working connection. A pin on a beach frontage may not be the car entrance. Keep a readable screenshot and address as well as an interactive map so another driver or reception can help if the app is unavailable. For a boat day, protect the phone from water and save the mainland or island landing by its actual name.
When mobile data fails, stop somewhere suitable and check the selected data line, remaining allowance and activation status. Contact the seller through the recorded channel when back online. Do not keep switching unknown profiles while trying to meet a car at a crowded exit. A little preparation keeps the phone in its proper role: useful for directions and arranging the next stop, not the centre of the holiday.
For a dual-SIM setup, keep the home line available for OTP messages only if its roaming terms allow what you need, and name the travel line as the data line. If the carrier requires an APN setting, use the value supplied for that exact plan; do not copy a random code for another network. An offline ticket and reception number are useful while the connection is being repaired, but do not send banking codes or account passwords to the SIM seller.

Short answers to decisions that commonly need confirmation before travel.
No. Some are data-only. Check ordinary calls and SMS separately from internet messaging, especially if reception, drivers or bank verification need a normal telephone line.
No. Calling 900 is part of the verified MobiFone Hi Vietnam process described here. Follow the actual carrier or purchased plan for other services; installation and activation are not always the same step.
Do not buy on that assumption. Check the exact model, region and lock status before purchase. eSIM hardware support does not remove a lock to the original carrier.
We have not measured a whole-island ranking. Ask about the actual accommodation and test there. Keep offline material for forest, remote-coast and boat days rather than treating a general network claim as coverage proof.
That is the price in MobiFone’s 18 March 2026 announcement for the listed seven-day package. Compare the current carrier purchase screen and conditions. It is a dated example, not a guaranteed ongoing tariff.
Turn Wi-Fi off, load a page, open the hotel pin and send a message. Test a normal call if included. Keep the receipt, phone number, expiry, top-up instructions and support contact.
