Phu Quoc areas: find your way from the river town to the island’s coasts
Phu Quoc changes character as you move around it. At Dương Đông, the river, market and evening food streets keep the town busy. Farther north, small coastal lanes give way to resort grounds, canals and fishing villages. In the south, An Thới’s boats share the horizon with the cable car and Sunset Town. Understanding those differences makes the island easier to enjoy, not just easier to navigate.
Use the schematic to understand the areas in relation to each other, not to find an entrance.

Choose an area around your itinerary
Use Dương Đông as the central town reference, Bãi Trường as the west-coast corridor south of it, and Ông Lang–Cửa Cạn as the transition into the northwest. Bãi Dài, Grand World and Gành Dầu belong to a northern day; An Thới, Sunset Town and Khem fit a southern day. Hàm Ninh and Cây Sao introduce the east coast.
These are visitor areas, not administrative boundaries. Long Beach/Bãi Trường and Bãi Dài are different coasts; Grand World and Sunset Town are different districts.
Match the trip style
Choose by the kind of day, not a ranking
Start with geography and the main purpose, then read the trade-off. An area that works for a fixed-time departure may be poor for a free-form road trip, and vice versa.
Everyday town access
Compare Duong Dong for time in town and Long Beach for time by the west coast.
The trade-offCheck meals, walking routes and room surroundings at the actual address.
The most useful first division is between the central town, the northwest, the south and the east coast.
Dương Đông is the everyday town reference, with the river mouth, market and Trần Hưng Đạo corridor leading into the west-coast visitor belt. The northwest brings together smaller coastal settlements and large planned attractions. The south combines An Thới’s working waterfront, access to the offshore islands and newer leisure districts. The east is where the mountains meet fishing settlements and a coast facing the morning light. None of these regions is a single attraction. Think of them as groups of places that make sense together, then choose the individual stops. That is more useful than drawing a route between every famous name on a map. A day with a clear regional focus leaves time for a meal, a walk and the stop you did not know you wanted until you arrived.

Dương Đông and Bãi Trường: the island’s busy west
Dương Đông is where a first visit can start with something ordinary and revealing: the market, the river and a meal in town.
Dinh Cậu sits at the river mouth, while the night market changes the emphasis after dark from household shopping to an evening food walk. Trần Hưng Đạo leads south through a long strip of restaurants, cafés, hotels and beach-facing businesses. This is the start of the Long Beach/Bãi Trường corridor, not a separate town with one centre. Farther south, larger resort grounds and the Sonasea area create a different pattern of evenings and meals. A hotel described as being on Long Beach can therefore put you close to central dining or in a more self-contained southern resort setting. For sightseeing, keep the Dương Đông river-mouth walk and night-market meal together, then treat farther-down Bãi Trường as another stop rather than assuming it is all within the same short walk.

Pick a region before choosing every stop
Town and food: Dương Đông.
Coastal lanes: Ông Lang and Cửa Cạn. Northern attractions: Bãi Dài and Grand World. Village and cape: Gành Dầu. Southern sea views: An Thới, Sunset Town and Khem. Eastern fishing coast: Hàm Ninh and Cây Sao.

Ông Lang, Cửa Cạn and the quieter coastal approaches
North of Dương Đông, Ông Lang changes the scale of a visit.
Smaller lanes, gardens and individual coastal properties replace the continuous bustle of the central corridor. A restaurant or beach outing here is about finding the right lane, not walking one long beachfront boulevard. Continue towards Cửa Cạn and the river becomes part of the geography. Vũng Bầu lies farther into the northwest, with another stretch of coast rather than a new town centre. These places work for a focused coastal afternoon, especially when lunch and the shore are close to the same chosen destination. The last approach matters: the main road brings you into the area, while the property or beach lane completes the journey. Plan around that actual arrival point. Returning to Dương Đông for the evening is a different plan from continuing north to Grand World, so choose the direction before adding dinner reservations at both ends.

The northwest: Bãi Dài, Grand World and Gành Dầu
Bãi Dài is the northwestern resort coast, distinct from Long Beach/Bãi Trường south of Dương Đông.
In this part of the island, Grand World supplies the canal walks, shops and evening performances; VinWonders and Safari are separate daytime attractions. Grand World opened in April 2021 as part of Phu Quoc United Center, adding a deliberately built entertainment district to the north. Continue to Gành Dầu village for a different scene: boats, seafood tables, a Nguyễn Trung Trực shrine and the cape looking out across the water. A good northern day might be one major park followed by Grand World, or Gành Dầu by daylight followed by the canal district at night. Those are alternatives, not a requirement to fit every northern attraction into one outing. Give the park its daytime hours or the village its unhurried lunch, then let the evening follow naturally.

Rạch Vẹm, Rạch Tràm and Bãi Thơm are not one village
The northern villages are often grouped under a single promise of “untouched Phu Quoc”, but their names should not be used interchangeably.
Rạch Vẹm is the village associated with the popular northern coastal outing; Starfish Beach is a beach destination, not a replacement name for every village scene. Rạch Tràm is a different northern settlement, and Bãi Thơm lies towards the northeast. Reaching one does not mean the others are a short walk around the bay. These trips suit daylight and a deliberate route, with time for the approach as well as the stop itself. Use the individual guide for the shore or village you actually want. If your main day is already built around Grand World or a large park, adding a remote coastal detour can change it completely. A separate northern-village outing gives the journey and the place more room.

The south: working harbour, hillside town and Khem bay
An Thới is the working-town reference for the south and the gateway to many offshore-island trips.
An Thới harbour and the cable-car route: the working port and visitor attraction share southern geography.Phu Quoc Times photo library
Nearby Sunset Town adds a Mediterranean-inspired hillside and the waterfront around Kiss Bridge, inaugurated in December 2023. The Hòn Thơm cable-car journey is another southern experience, with its own terminal and daytime rhythm. Across towards Khem, the scene changes again to a curved beach and resort bay. These places are close enough in regional terms to build a southern day, but they still need a sensible sequence. Choose Hòn Thơm or Khem as the main daytime visit, then finish at Sunset Town for the late light and dinner. If the purpose is to understand An Thới, leave time for its streets and harbour rather than treating the town only as a transfer point. The working waterfront and the designed promenade tell different parts of the island’s story.

The east coast, then a three-day regional plan
Hàm Ninh faces east, with mountain scenery behind the settlement and a strong seafood identity.
Cây Sao is farther along the eastern coast and should be treated as its own destination rather than assumed to be part of a village-centre walk. A morning visit suits this side’s light; a seafood meal provides a natural reason to linger. For a first three-day outline, use one day for Dương Đông and the nearby west coast, one for a selected northern cluster, and one for the south. Fit Hàm Ninh into a separate eastern morning if it is a priority, rather than forcing it into every cross-island journey. This outline is a starting point, not a sightseeing quota. A beach-focused trip can repeat the same coast; a food-focused trip can spend more time in town. The map becomes useful when it supports your interests instead of dictating a race around the island.

What is the best area for a first visit to Phu Quoc?⌄
Dương Đông is the simplest town reference for food, the river mouth and a first evening walk. Use it to understand the central west, then choose a northern and a southern day according to your interests.
Why do Bãi Dài and Bãi Trường appear in different regions?⌄
No. Long Beach usually refers to Bãi Trường, the west-coast corridor south of Dương Đông. Bãi Dài is in the northwest, near the northern resort and attraction cluster.
Should I combine Grand World and Sunset Town in one evening?⌄
Give them separate evenings. Grand World is in the northwest and Sunset Town in the south; crossing between them uses the time when each district is becoming most enjoyable.
Which areas make a sensible northern day?⌄
Choose one main daytime focus: a park, Gành Dầu village or a coastal outing. Grand World can follow in the evening. Safari, VinWonders, Gành Dầu and the remote northern villages are not a single short circuit.
Where should I go for sunrise and sunset scenery?⌄
The east coast, including Hàm Ninh, faces the morning light. The west-coast corridor and the sea-facing Sunset Town waterfront are natural choices for late-afternoon scenery. Local cloud and the exact viewpoint shape the view.
Does choosing an area also settle where I should stay?⌄
It narrows the choice, but the exact base still matters. A hotel on the long Bãi Trường corridor may be near town dining or farther south among resorts. Use the stay-area guide for meals, transport and evening access around the address.
