Phu Quoc beaches: find the shore for your kind of day
There is a moment on the west coast when the light warms the sand and everyone seems to turn towards the sea. At Sao, the pleasure is different: pale sand in a southern bay, a long lunch and time to wander away from the busiest activity boats. Farther north, a river mouth, a wooded pocket or a resort shoreline changes the day again. Start with the experience you want, then choose the beach.

Which coast fits your outing?
For a first sandy-bay outing, start with Sao or Khem. For sunset near food and accommodation, choose a section of Long Beach or Ong Lang. Vung Bau suits a slower bay afternoon; Bai Dai suits a northern resort day. Cua Can is a river-mouth landscape, while Ham Ninh is a village-and-food visit. Those are different reasons to go, not a ranking from best to worst.
This directory covers 17 shores and coastal localities. Vung Trau Nam, Bai Dat Do and Vinh Dam remain clearly marked orientation notes because their visitor access is unresolved.

Seasonal coast guide
Season helps choose dates, not today’s water
Vietnam Tourism describes November–April as broadly drier and May–October as wetter. This is planning context; the table supplies no live forecast or coast-specific swimming clearance.

Begin with the sand, the light or the village
Our beach reporting keeps returning to small differences that change the whole outing: the feel of Sao’s pale sand, a meal behind Ong Lang’s trees, the wide curve at Vung Bau and late light on Long Beach.
Khem’s southeast shoreline offers a different setting from the long west-coast visitor strip.Phu Quoc Times photo library
Choose the one you want time for. Sao and Khem make sense when the bay itself is the attraction. The west coast makes sense when you want beach time to continue into dinner. The fishing coasts make sense when the boats, market and food matter more than a long swim. For a first visit, one well-chosen shore and an unhurried meal are usually more satisfying than crossing the island to collect three beach names.
Read the coast by neighbourhood
Long Beach is the clearest example.
The Tran Hung Dao and Cua Lap stretch has town-side streets and established hotels behind it; farther south, Sonasea and Phu Quoc Marina organise the day around different resort and dining clusters. Ong Lang breaks into pockets of sand and rock reached by different lanes. Bai Dai is the northwestern resort coast, not another name for Bai Truong. On a map, save the actual restaurant or receiving entrance as well as the beach name. That is how you avoid booking a table at the opposite end of the coast or turning a short beach walk into a vehicle transfer. The individual guides below explain those local distinctions.
Let lunch or dinner give the day a centre
There are useful named choices rather than a promise that every beach has the same facilities.
Sailing Club in Phu Quoc Marina gives a Long Beach afternoon a food-and-music finish. Cyan at Salinda is a Cua Lap sunset-dining choice. Aura gives Ong Lang a beach-club alternative to a quieter lane-side meal. Bamboo Cottages offers a Vietnamese kitchen in Vung Bau; Green Bay has named dining venues on the Cua Can coast. These are places to contact for a table, not universal beach passes. A restaurant booking, a lounger and pool use can be different purchases. Choose the host that fits your day and arrange the facilities you need there, instead of moving from gate to gate.
Sao’s sand and the northern starfish trip are different outings
Sao Beach is the southern bay near An Thoi.
The northern Starfish Beach outing belongs to the Rach Vem and Ham Rong geography. Similar search names often hide that long separation. Pick Sao for sand and bay time, and use the northern guide if observing starfish is the purpose. Keep any animals submerged and where they are found. Ham Ninh also deserves its own description: a working east-coast village, a market and a seafood meal, rather than a substitute for a southern sandy bay. A photograph of a village, river or island should help explain that place, not stand in for every beach on this page.
Give the weather one useful place in the plan
Phu Quoc has a broadly drier and a wetter part of the year, but the two sides of the island do not receive the same wind and wave exposure at the same moment.
Our Long Beach originals describe how quickly the western shore can change from a gentle afternoon to rougher surf and washed-up debris. Use the season to choose a likely kind of trip, then use the weather page and local shore notices for the actual day. If swimming is not appealing, a shorter walk and a named meal can still make the outing worthwhile. For remote northern stops, arrange the return car before the outward driver leaves. The three access-limited locality notes remain for orientation rather than beach-day recommendations.
Next decisions
Continue planning the beach outing
Use area guides for context, transport for the journey and stay guides for an overnight base.
Which beach would you start with on a first visit?⌄
Sao for a southern sandy-bay outing; a named Long Beach section for sunset close to dining. Choose by the part of the island you are already exploring.
Are Bai Dai and Long Beach the same place?⌄
No. Bai Dai is the northwestern resort coast; Long Beach/Bai Truong is the western corridor south of Duong Dong.
Where should I go for sunset?⌄
Compare a Long Beach section, Ong Lang, Vung Bau or Bai Dai on the west and northwest. Pick the actual table or shore stop before travelling.
Which place suits a quieter afternoon?⌄
Vung Bau or an Ong Lang pocket can fit. Ong Lang also has beach clubs, so choose the particular host rather than relying on the area name to mean quiet.
Is Sao Beach where the northern starfish trips go?⌄
No. Sao is near An Thoi in the south; the northern trip is associated with Rach Vem and Ham Rong.
Can I visit a resort restaurant without buying a room?⌄
Ask the restaurant for a non-resident reservation. Dining, pool use, loungers and beach facilities can have separate terms.
Is Cua Can a swimming beach or a river outing?⌄
Its identity is the river-mouth landscape. The river activity, village and coastal resorts are separate destinations; choose the purpose first.
Which beach is guaranteed calm all year?⌄
None. Choose swimming from the conditions and notices at the actual shore, not a photograph or a season label.
Can I fit several distant beaches into one day?⌄
You can travel between them, but one coast plus a meal leaves more time to enjoy the island. Keep a second stop nearby rather than crossing from south to north for another photo.
Why are some places marked as orientation notes?⌄
Visitor access remains unresolved for Vung Trau Nam, Bai Dat Do and Vinh Dam. They are not treated as confirmed ready-to-go beach days.
