Sao Beach: pale sand, a bay-side lunch and a southern afternoon

Sao’s sand is the part that stays with you: light under the feet, a curve of shore held between green edges and a bay that makes you want to put the camera away for a while. Then an activity boat passes and the scene changes again. The pleasure is finding your stretch, settling into lunch and giving the beach enough time to become more than a photograph.

Choose Sao for a southern sandy-bay visit near An Thoi. Reach the beach from Nguyen Van Cu/DT 46, choose a named receiving point and spend the visit around the sand, lunch and the water conditions you find. My Lan and Paradiso are useful place names in our original reporting; Sao is separate from northern Starfish Beach.

Use the receiving business for parking, a table and any beach services. Chair, shower and activity charges are separate questions, not one island-wide entrance tariff.

What it really feels like

Find the part of the bay you want to stay with

The original Sao articles describe two impressions that belong together: very fine pale sand and the sudden interruption of watersport engines.

The shoreline can hold both. Instead of judging the whole bay from the first cluster of loungers, look along the sand, see where boats work and choose a place to settle. A beach walk lets the shape of the bay appear gradually, with green edges behind it rather than just a close-up of turquoise water. Early or late in your outing, take time for that view. The busy restaurant section can be useful for lunch and shade while another nearby stretch suits a quieter sit on the sand.

Nguyen Van Cu, then the beach receiving point

Sao is reached from the southern Nguyen Van Cu/DT 46 corridor, not from the northern Rach Vem road. Our route notes use My Lan as a landmark for the final approach; the municipal tourism directory also places My Lan at Sao in An Thoi. Choose the actual restaurant, parking or pickup point before the last turn. Once there, remember the way back to your driver: a long stroll on the sand can leave you some distance from the vehicle entrance. If continuing to Sunset Town later, keep dry clothes and the return arrangement with the same car. The beach and a southern evening work well together when the shore is allowed a few unhurried hours.

A real lunch stop gives the beach day a centre

My Lan and Paradiso appear in our originals as beachside reference points. The municipal Paradiso listing describes seafood and familiar meal options such as grilled fish, seafood noodles and vegetables; La Veranda’s own brochure also identifies Paradiso at Sao. Use these as named places to enquire about lunch, rather than assuming a fixed package is included at every entrance. A whole grilled fish with rice and vegetables is a sensible shared-table idea; ask the kitchen for the portion and price before ordering. If you also want a lounger, towel or shower, settle those together at the receiving business. It is easier to enjoy the sand once the practical base for the afternoon is clear.

Keep swimming and activity boats in separate spaces

Jet skis, banana boats and other activities are part of Sao’s visitor scene in the original reporting. Before entering the water, look for the designated bathing space, boat approaches and any current flags or staff directions. Do not turn a quieter gap between boats into your own crossing lane. Children can enjoy the sand and shallow edge with an adult close beside them, without making deeper water the point of the day. The east-facing bay can look different from the west coast during the same weather pattern, but a sheltered-looking photograph is not a daily swimming report. If the water is uninviting, a walk, lunch and bay views still make a coherent visit.

Beach first, one southern addition later

For a suggested half-day, arrive before lunch, choose your beach base, walk or bathe where conditions allow and leave the meal unhurried. Keep roughly three to four hours for the beach and food together, excluding the drive; this is an editorial time budget rather than a venue timetable. Afterwards, choose one nearby purpose: An Thoi for the working-town and food setting, or Sunset Town for a later stroll and evening plan. An all-day Hon Thom water-park visit asks for a different allocation. Sao is most enjoyable when you are not watching the clock for an immediate next boat. And if your goal is a northern starfish outing, start with that guide rather than adding it to this southern day.

FAQ

Practical questions about Sao Beach

Is Sao the same as Starfish Beach?

No. Sao is near An Thoi in the south. The northern starfish outing is associated with Rach Vem and Ham Rong.

What should I tell the driver?

Use Nguyen Van Cu/DT 46, then your selected Sao receiving business. My Lan is a route landmark in our originals; save the exact restaurant or pickup pin.

Where can I enquire about lunch?

My Lan and Paradiso are named beach references. Ask the chosen kitchen about the meal, seating and any separate shower or lounger service.

Can I swim beside the activity boats?

Use the designated bathing area and follow shore instructions. Keep clear of boat approaches and watersport lanes.

How much time should I leave for Sao?

Our suggested beach-and-lunch visit is three to four hours, plus the drive. Shorten or extend it around the conditions and your chosen meal.

What combines well with the beach?

Choose one later southern stop, such as An Thoi or Sunset Town. Keep an all-day Hon Thom outing for a separate plan.
