ENTRY PLANNING

Phu Quoc Visa and Entry: Choose the Right Route

The important line on the itinerary is not simply ‘Phu Quoc’. It is the point where you enter Vietnam and what you do before reaching the island or after leaving it. Get that route clear and the visa question becomes much easier to answer.

Phú Quốc has an island-specific visa exemption for stays of up to 30 days. It is separate from national passport-based exemptions and Vietnam’s e-visa. A mainland stay needs the appropriate national entry permission. Check the complete route against the official rules before paying for non-refundable travel.

A practical decision

Three permissions that should not be mixed up

Start with the passport and the whole journey, not the longest visa-free number you have seen.

The island-specific exemption allows a qualifying Phú Quốc stay of up to 30 days. A national exemption depends on nationality, passport and its conditions; it can be more useful for a trip that also includes Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. An e-visa is a separate permission with an approved validity period and entry allowance. None of these is selected simply by writing a Phú Quốc hotel address on a booking.

A Vietnamese citizen travelling domestically does not need a tourist visa for the island; the carrier’s identity-document requirements still apply. For a foreign passport, use the Ministry of Foreign Affairs list for your passport type. Do not infer eligibility from residence, a different family member’s passport or a travel companion’s previous trip. The route and the traveller both matter.

What the 30-day island route actually covers

Keep the island-only journey distinct from entering the mainland for a holiday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes the Phú Quốc exemption and qualifying transit through another Vietnamese international border gate while remaining in the transit area before continuing to the island. That is not permission to spend two nights in Ho Chi Minh City without an applicable national exemption or visa. A domestic connection that requires clearing immigration and collecting bags is a case to resolve before buying the ticket, not at the boarding desk.

For a direct international arrival followed by an island stay and departure abroad, ask the airline to confirm the required documents for that actual itinerary. For an international-to-domestic connection, ask specifically about remaining in the applicable transit arrangement, immigration and baggage handling. A through ticket can simplify travel, but its commercial label alone does not establish immigration eligibility. Keep the airline’s route-specific instruction with the travel documents.

Put your itinerary in one of these cases

The permission needs to cover every Vietnamese entry and every place you intend to stay.

Case one: you fly from abroad directly to PQC, stay on Phú Quốc and depart internationally. The island-specific pathway is relevant. Case two: you visit Ho Chi Minh City, then take a domestic flight or travel overland to Hà Tiên and a ferry. You need a national permission that covers that mainland entry. The ferry does not undo the earlier immigration step.

Case three: you arrive on the island and later want Hanoi or a mainland beach. Establish the national permission before adding that leg; the island exemption is not a whole-country pass. Case four: you leave Vietnam for Cambodia and return. If relying on an e-visa, the entry allowance must fit that return; a single-entry document is not made multiple-entry by having unused days. Write each border crossing in order and test the document against it.

Use the official portal and keep the application record

Vietnam’s e-visa can be issued for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry; the approval sets your actual permission.

The Immigration Department’s portal is evisa.gov.vn; it also identifies thithucdientu.gov.vn as an official domain. The listed application fee is USD 25 for single entry or USD 50 for multiple entry, non-refundable if the visa is not granted. Treat a separate agency’s service price as a different charge. Choose the entry dates and allowance for your journey rather than assuming every application receives the maximum period.

Enter the passport details exactly as required, upload the requested images and retain the application code, payment record and email used. When the result is issued, read it before travelling: passport number, name, validity and entry allowance must fit the trip. A payment receipt or application screenshot is not an approved visa. Start early enough to correct a problem; do not build a tight departure around an unofficial guaranteed turnaround.

Make a document check for every traveller

Passport type, validity, booking name and permission must agree.

Keep the original passport, the approved visa if needed, accommodation address and onward travel information together. Follow the validity requirement attached to your pathway; the Ministry’s national unilateral-exemption rules specify at least six months. Do not turn that into a claim that every passport and visa scenario has identical rules. A renewed passport is a new document: resolve any visa tied to the old number before travel.

Check children individually, including their documents and the carrier’s requirements. For a mixed-nationality family, one person’s exemption does not settle the others. Save usable copies offline and separately from the bag holding the originals. Use the name and number on the actual passport, not an abbreviated hotel profile or an old booking-account name. Give yourself time to fix a mismatch while still at home.

  • List every entry into Vietnam and any mainland stay.
  • Match passport number, validity dates and entry allowance to the approved document.
  • Keep the approved result and onward booking offline.

If a document does not fit, fix the route before flying

A hotel reservation cannot correct a visa error or authorise a mainland extension.

A wrong passport number, an approval beginning after arrival or a missing second entry is a real itinerary problem. Use the Immigration Department’s application status and contact process for the visa; use the airline for boarding-document instructions. Keep changes written and keep the revised approval with the journey. Avoid submitting passport images to a lookalike site because its advertisement promises a quicker fix.

On arrival, read the permitted stay recorded for you and keep it with the departure plan. Do not treat a hotel extension as an extension of immigration permission. If the trip changes from island-only to mainland travel, resolve that permission through the competent authority before travelling onward. The point of the earlier route diagram is to make these decisions before they interrupt the holiday.

If a passport is lost or stolen, contact the relevant police and your own embassy or consulate for the replacement process, then resolve the Vietnamese immigration document as required. A replacement passport does not automatically recreate the old visa or exit record. For example, US government guidance explicitly requires both replacement passport and Vietnamese visa arrangements. An overstay is not solved by extending the room booking; contact the competent immigration authority rather than relying on a hotel or a stranger to promise a fix.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to decisions that commonly need confirmation before travel.

Is Phu Quoc visa-free for 30 days?

There is an island-specific exemption for a qualifying stay of up to 30 days. It is not a general permission to tour mainland Vietnam. National exemptions and e-visas are separate pathways, and the whole route determines which applies.

Can I connect through Ho Chi Minh City using the island exemption?

The official rule includes qualifying transit while remaining in the applicable transit area before continuing to Phú Quốc. Do not assume a domestic connection with immigration and bag collection meets that arrangement. Resolve the exact connection with the airline and official entry rules before booking.

What are the official Vietnam e-visa fees?

The Immigration Department lists USD 25 for single entry and USD 50 for multiple entry; the application fee is non-refundable if not granted. Agency handling charges are separate. The approval, rather than payment, establishes the permission.

Can I add Hanoi after entering under the island-only exemption?

Do not assume the island permission covers it. Establish a valid national entry/stay pathway before the mainland leg. A nationality-based exemption or an appropriate visa may be relevant, depending on your own documents and route.

Does a single-entry e-visa allow a return from Cambodia?

Unused days do not create a second entry. If the trip leaves Vietnam and returns, obtain permission that covers that return. Count border crossings, not just nights on the island.

Do Vietnamese visitors need a visa for Phu Quoc?

Vietnamese citizens travelling domestically do not need a tourist visa for the island. Carry the identity documents required by the flight or ferry carrier, including the applicable documents for children.
