What should I check before and during a Phu Quoc trip?
TRAVEL PLANNING
The easiest money mistake here is not a clever scam. It is agreeing to a number before asking what the number buys: one person, one car, a kilogram of seafood or the whole meal. Get the unit right and the zeros become much less intimidating.
Pay everyday bills in VND, keep smaller notes for small purchases and a separate payment backup. Read the full amount and unit before agreeing. At a card terminal or ATM, distinguish the withdrawal or purchase from an optional home-currency conversion. Budget rooms, meals, transport and paid outings separately.
A practical decision
50K means 50,000 VND in informal pricing; it still needs a clear basis.
VND is the local currency. A menu can shorten 50,000 to 50K; ask for the full written amount if a spoken quote is unclear. Keep the 20,000 and 500,000 notes distinct rather than identifying a note only by colour. Use smaller denominations for a drink, market snack or short purchase so the seller does not have to break a large note at the start of a busy morning.
Seafood is the useful island example. A tank label can be per kilogram, per 100 grams or per item, and cooking may be another charge. Agree the species, weight, preparation and final basis before it is cooked. Likewise, a boat price can be per passenger while a private car is for the vehicle. Do not compare the bare numbers until both describe the same purchase.
A QR code at a small business is not proof that a foreign card can pay it.
Small purchases and market food are easier with VND; larger hotels and established businesses may offer international-card payment. Ask before the meal or service if it matters. A domestic bank-transfer QR and an international card terminal are different payment routes. A visitor should not reach the final bill assuming the home banking app works with every local code.
Vietnamese visitors using their domestic banking app can check the recipient name and full amount before confirming the transfer. International visitors should keep a usable card and cash alternative rather than sending money through a stranger’s account. For a deposit, match the beneficiary to the booking conversation and get a receipt with the remaining balance. A screenshot that says paid does not explain what the payment reserved.
Read the machine’s charge and currency choice before confirming.
An ATM can show its own withdrawal fee and offer to convert the transaction into your home currency. Visa describes that optional conversion as DCC, with its own exchange rate and charges. Compare the disclosed offer with the terms of your own card; choosing VND leaves conversion to the card side. Declining conversion is not necessarily the same as cancelling the cash withdrawal, so read the screen rather than pressing the brightest button.
Withdrawal limits and charges depend on both the machine and your card. Read the amount offered, the machine’s fee and any conversion choice before confirming. For cash exchange, use a bank or authorised service and compare the net VND received after charges. Keep the receipt and agree large purchases in VND rather than relying on an old mental shortcut from dollars.
Separate shared room and car costs from per-person food and tickets.
Here is a calculation example, not a price survey: two travellers, four nights, a room quote of 1,000,000 VND per night, food allowance of 300,000 per person per day for five days, two airport rides totalling 600,000 and one paid outing at 500,000 per person. The subtotal is 4,000,000 + 3,000,000 + 600,000 + 1,000,000 = 8,600,000 VND, before flights and extras. Replace each assumed input with the quote for your trip.
This exposes the useful savings. Moving to a cheaper but distant hotel may add more transport than it removes in room cost. A private car is shared by the group, while an attraction ticket usually is not. Count arrival and departure days for food and transport even if you have fewer hotel nights. Keep an unspent reserve separate from the spending target so a larger bank balance is not mistaken for money that needs using.
Count the inclusions you will use, then add what the price leaves out.
Compare the same room type, dates and occupancy before choosing a price: a guesthouse room, private bungalow and resort room do different jobs. Include breakfast, extra-person charges and the cost of getting to meals. With a scooter or car, account for fuel, rental hours, waiting, parking and the deposit separately; a daily headline alone does not show the money you need available.
For meals, decide whether you want one substantial seafood dinner or a week built around premium resort restaurants; the two plans do not share a useful fixed daily average. For outings, count optional transfers, meals and photographs against what is already included. A package can save money if you want its actual components. It is not better value because its list of extras is longer.
Know what is already paid, what is held and what is still due.
Put the room balance, transfer payment and first meals in one arrival note. Obtain enough cash for the payments that actually require it, not the entire holiday. Keep a second card or payment route separate from the main wallet and know how to contact the issuer if a card fails. Finish money tasks near the accommodation before a remote coastal day.
For a security deposit, write down the amount, what it covers, how deductions are assessed and when it is released. A card hold, a cash deposit and a payment for the service affect available money differently. Keep handover photos where relevant and a record of the return. At checkout, reconcile the balance before the airport ride; that is a much better time to solve a bill than through messages from the departure gate.
RELATED DECISIONS

Short answers to decisions that commonly need confirmation before travel.
Read the rate and charges. Home-currency conversion is an optional service, not a requirement to use the card. Choosing VND leaves the exchange to your card arrangement; check its own fees as well.
No. A domestic bank-transfer code is not the same as an international-card checkout. Establish a method that works for your own account before the bill, and keep cash or another payment route.
Add the purchases and rides that need cash, then a reasonable reserve for that outing. Do not carry the entire room and activity budget if those are already paid or payable by card. Remote days need planning before leaving the main visitor area.
Species, the price unit, actual weight, cooking charge and what the final quote includes. A tank number alone is not a meal total. Ask for the full amount in writing if the spoken shorthand is unclear.
No. It is arithmetic using clearly stated assumptions for two people, four nights and five days. Replace its room, meal, transfer and outing inputs with your own quotes; flights and extras are outside that subtotal.
Track it separately. It reduces money available until returned, but it is not the same as the final service cost. Keep the release terms and handover record so the budget and the settlement stay clear.
