Getting Around Without a Scooter
Can I enjoy Phu Quoc without renting a scooter?
PHU QUOC TRANSPORT GUIDE
The bus is useful when its route matches your day. The mistake is treating a line through the island as a door-to-door service for every beach, resort and attraction along it.
Use 17 for the airport–Grand World corridor, 19 for InterContinental–airport–Grand World, and 20 for Bãi Vòng port–Grand World. Public routes now have fares; the northern internal shuttles are a separate service. Plan both the stop-to-door walk and the return direction.
Notable rain or wind increases the value of covered transport and a confirmed return plan.
Conditions can differ across Phu Quoc. Use this as a planning signal, not a guarantee for the whole route.
Wet roads; favor a car or taxi and delay motorbike trips in heavy rain.
Full forecastA practical decision
The official map lists 17 from PQC, 19 from InterContinental and 20 from Bãi Vòng, all reaching Grand World.
Do not choose only by the destination on the bus. Route 20 is useful for a ferry-port journey but does not become an airport bus because both are arrival points. Route 19 serves a southern Long Beach resort corridor before the airport, not every hotel in An Thới or Khem. When the hotel says it is ‘near the bus’, ask for the exact named stop and compare the pedestrian approach with the hotel entrance.
For the town and western corridor, the map includes named landmarks and junctions rather than a stop at every property. An Ông Lang junction is the beginning of the last leg, not necessarily a beach drop-off. The first decision is whether your actual destination is on the line; the second is whether the final distance works with the bags, children or mobility needs of your group. Choose another mode when those two answers do not fit.
VinWonders’ published 2026 guidance gives 20,000 VND for one/adjacent fare zones and 50,000 VND for longer public-route journeys, effective 1 January.
The northern internal shuttles remain free. Eligible park-ticket and hotel guests have a separate public-route exemption process, so have the relevant booking QR ready rather than assuming a stay anywhere on the island qualifies. Ask staff to validate the entitlement before boarding. The useful distinction is public route, internal shuttle or a particular hotel’s guest transfer; three vehicles bearing related branding can have different boarding rules.
For the airport-to-Grand World journey, use the longer public-route fare in your budget unless you qualify for the exemption. For a family, multiply the fare by the passengers who need tickets and count the return as another trip. Add any final taxi from the stop. That produces a fair comparison with a direct whole-car quote; comparing one bus ticket with the price of a car for four people does not.
The live route-17 information gives 80–100 minutes and a 15-minute interval; that is a planning range, not a countdown to your stop.
A corridor with repeated stops takes longer than a direct car. Add the time to reach your stop, the wait and the final approach. A park reservation or flight is a reason to work backwards from the required arrival rather than choosing the latest plausible bus. The map’s route-wide operating span is not the departure time at every intermediate stop, and the displayed estimate does not remove traffic or loading time.
Use the operator’s route view in the correct direction and look at the specific stop. Save the return information while you have a good connection. For a late Grand World evening, do not infer your return from a daytime hotel shuttle or from a route number seen on the way out. The time that matters is the usable departure at your return stop, followed by a way from the final stop into your accommodation.
For VinWonders or Safari, select the appropriate internal connection after reaching the northern hub.
Keep the names of the park and the parking area in the plan. If you are going to VinWonders, do not get off at Grand World and expect the entrance to be beside the stop. Find the next service and its actual destination before leaving the first bus. A photograph of the stop sign and a saved park map help more than a vague instruction to ‘change somewhere at Grand World’.
Choose one major attraction as the main day. Safari, VinWonders and Grand World can appear close together on a map, but each contains time spent walking, queuing, eating or waiting for a show. Transport connecting them does not create enough time to experience all of them properly in one day. A park day followed by a nearby evening can work; a rushed circuit built around catching every shuttle usually does not.
Do not board a vehicle on the assumption that its route or logo makes it public transport.
Hotel transfers may require guest status, a reservation or a particular room package. A tour minibus is usually tied to its booked group and itinerary. Ask reception for the service name, eligible passengers, departure, return and final drop-off. A photograph of an empty transfer cabin illustrates that type of vehicle; it is not evidence that it operates as a VinBus service or that anyone can board it.
If the shuttle is already included in your accommodation or tour, use that inclusion deliberately. Avoid paying for a second transport plan for the same leg. On the other hand, an included service that stops at a distant main-road point or leaves before your evening plans finish is not a complete solution. Buy the missing leg rather than assuming the word shuttle guarantees a door-to-door return.
A bus trip includes getting on, storing the bags and reaching the actual door after getting off.
Bring bags that the group can manage through boarding without blocking the aisle. For a stroller or wheelchair, ask the actual operator about the relevant vehicle and stop rather than transferring the specifications of one bus to the entire network. A ramp on the vehicle does not fix a difficult pavement or an unpaved last road. Keep the hotel contact and a backup pickup location available if the final walk is not workable.
At the return stop, stand where the driver can recognise passengers and where the direction matches the intended journey. Do not wait at a similarly named stop across the road without checking the route view. If you miss the service that made the connection practical, take the direct alternative rather than using successive speculative transfers to rescue a small fare saving. The bus is a good tool when it simplifies the day, not a test you have to pass.
Questions worth resolving before choosing the vehicle.
The public routes and internal shuttles are different. Public-route zone fares apply in 2026; internal northern shuttles are free. Eligible hotel or attraction bookings have a separate exemption, which staff validate against the relevant booking.
Plan the public airport connection to Grand World and an onward internal shuttle for the park. Do not equate the Grand World stop with the VinWonders entrance. Allow time for both services and the walk between their stops.
Those published corridors do not provide a direct stop at either beach. Do not confuse route 19’s southern Long Beach hotels with Khem farther south. Use a separate transfer for the actual beach entrance.
It makes intermediate stops and may require an onward service or final walk. Plan with the operator’s route duration and your stop, then add waiting and the last leg. A direct-car map estimate is not a bus timetable.
The official map lists route 20 between Bãi Vòng and Grand World. Use the actual pier on the ferry ticket and the correct stop direction; another arrival pier is not automatically covered by the same route.
Look at the return direction in the operator’s map. It can use another side of the road or a different stop sequence. Save its exact name and location before beginning the visit, especially for an evening return.
