Driving and Road Safety
What should I check before driving?
PHU QUOC TRANSPORT GUIDE
An air-conditioned car is useful for a family coastal day, especially with bags and several stops. Self-drive adds a different question: whether you want to spend the holiday managing the vehicle as well as using it.
Compare self-drive with a car and driver for the same itinerary. Our original small-car budget is around 800,000–1,200,000 VND a day before the contract’s extras. Rent when the usable hours, driving documents, deposit and damage responsibility all fit the trip.
Notable rain or wind increases the value of covered transport and a confirmed return plan.
Conditions can differ across Phu Quoc. Use this as a planning signal, not a guarantee for the whole route.
Wet roads; favor a car or taxi and delay motorbike trips in heavy rain.
Full forecastA practical decision
A car with a driver is a separate product, not a self-drive rental with a small optional extra.
Self-drive suits a traveler who is eligible to drive, comfortable with the roads and planning repeated independent outings. You can decide when to leave a beach or change lunch without keeping a driver on standby. In exchange, you handle finding the entrance, parking, fuel, the rental contract and the return inspection. A car with a driver moves those road tasks out of the day, but its route and waiting hours need agreeing.
If the plan is one distant attraction and a late dinner, compare a driver quote before reserving a rental. A car parked all day outside VinWonders provides little freedom during the visit. If the plan is several days of short outings from a villa, self-drive can be useful. The correct comparison is the complete holiday pattern, not a rental headline against the most expensive isolated taxi ride you can imagine.
Our original planning range for a small self-drive car is 800,000–1,200,000 VND a day; larger vehicles and different dates can change it.
Get the make or equivalent class, transmission, rental period, kilometre allowance, delivery and collection in one quote. A 24-hour hire and a calendar-day hire are not the same. Write the return time beside the pickup time, including where the supplier will meet you. An airport collection charge can be reasonable, but it belongs in the comparison rather than appearing at handover.
Separate refundable deposit from the rental price and from the insurance excess. Ask when and how the deposit returns, whether a card authorisation or cash is required, and how later charges are handled. Fuel, parking, extra hours and mileage beyond the allowance may remain yours. The cost difference between two offers is meaningful only when you compare the same usable hours, distance and responsibility for damage.
The supplier’s acceptance of a licence does not settle whether it is valid for driving in Vietnam.
Read your issuing country’s Vietnam driving guidance and the vehicle entitlement before booking. UK and US documentation rules are not interchangeable, as the government sources linked below explain. Do not buy a generic online ‘international licence’ and assume it solves the problem. If the documents do not work, book the driver-inclusive version of the route rather than trying to fix eligibility at the rental desk.
Ask for the insurance terms rather than a one-word assurance that the car is insured. Which damage is covered, what excess remains, and what happens to tyres, glass, underbody damage or an unauthorised driver? These are questions for the actual contract; do not assume an exclusion is either present or absent. Name every intended driver and keep the agreed restrictions with the booking. Do not use a passport as the rental deposit.
Photographs and a signed condition record make the return conversation much simpler.
Walk around with the supplier and record bodywork, wheels, glass, interior marks, mileage and fuel. Test lights, wipers, air conditioning and seat belts before setting off. Check the spare-wheel or roadside assistance arrangement for the vehicle. An island day can be hot, wet and full of sandy footwear, so the cleaning rule deserves reading alongside the paintwork condition.
Load the bags and any stroller before accepting that the vehicle fits. Install a booked child restraint with enough time to resolve a problem rather than doing it while the group waits beside the road. Confirm which documents stay in the car, what number handles a breakdown and whether you may use the planned coastal approaches. A model substitution should still satisfy the people-and-bags requirement you booked.
A beach pin or pedestrian square is not a parking instruction.
For Khem and Sunset Town, get the vehicle entrance for the hotel or attraction rather than following a pin on the waterfront. For Ông Lang or Cửa Cạn, ask about the final side road before taking a larger car into it. Do not use a beach or working pier as an improvised car park. The drive is only useful if you can leave the car legitimately and reach the place on foot without a difficult last leg.
In Dương Đông, a car can be less convenient than a short taxi ride followed by walking around the market and harbour. Keep north and south on separate sightseeing days when possible, and avoid finishing an unfamiliar coastal route late simply because the vehicle is comfortable. A meal with alcohol is a reason to leave the rental parked and use a driver for the evening, not a reason to shorten the wait before driving.
A rental handback is an appointment, not simply dropping keys on the way to a flight.
Meet the supplier while you still have time to compare condition, mileage and fuel. Photograph the final gauge and car before leaving, and get the balance and deposit result recorded. Do not schedule the inspection so close to airport check-in that you cannot resolve a disputed mark or payment. An airport drop-off is convenient only when the agreed meeting location and handback time are clear.
If a fault or collision occurs, stop safely, contact the supplier and follow the insurer’s reporting process rather than commissioning a repair independently. Keep the location, photographs and messages together. The rental decision is easier when you think through that process at the start: you are choosing not just a way to reach the beach, but responsibility for the vehicle until the contract closes.
Questions worth resolving before choosing the vehicle.
Our original budgeting range is 800,000–1,200,000 VND a day for a small car, with larger cars above that. It is a planning reference. Obtain the actual dates, model, usable hours, mileage, delivery and deposit terms before comparing.
No. The issuing country, permit convention, national licence and vehicle entitlement matter. Read the government guidance for your documents before booking. A rental company saying yes is not a substitute for valid driving entitlement.
For a single long sightseeing day, a late return or an itinerary where parking and waiting are the main complications. Compare the same stops and hours, including overtime, with the full self-drive cost and responsibility.
Not necessarily. The deposit secures the rental; the excess is the liability defined by the insurance terms for a claim. Ask for both amounts and the refund process. Do not assume the deposit caps every possible charge.
Do not treat a shoreline pin as vehicle access. Use the destination’s authorised road entrance and parking area, then walk the final section. Some beach approaches are unsuitable for a rental car even when navigation draws a line there.
Only by arrangement with the supplier. Set the meeting point, collection charge if any and inspection time before booking. Leave room for the handback before the airline’s check-in deadline.
