PHU QUOC TRANSPORT GUIDE

Phu Quoc Scooter Rental: Costs, Licences & Useful Routes

A scooter is at its best on an unhurried coastal day: breakfast near the hotel, a beach stop and a café on the way back. It is much less useful carrying airport luggage or waiting unused while you spend a day on a boat.

Rent only for the days when riding adds value. Our original budgeting starts around 150,000 VND a day for an ordinary automatic, with newer models often higher. Choose a sound vehicle, document the handover and establish driving eligibility independently of the shop’s willingness to rent.

A practical decision

Budget for the whole rental day

Around 150,000 VND for a basic automatic and 200,000 VND or more for a newer model are planning examples from our originals, not a live price list.

Ask for the exact model, pickup and return times, delivery charge, fuel arrangement and deposit before comparing offers. A ‘day’ can mean a calendar day or a defined number of hours. If you collect at noon and return after dinner the next day, write those times out. Otherwise a small price difference can disappear into overtime you never meant to buy.

Hotel delivery is convenient, especially when the bike will be collected there at the end. Ask who actually supplies and maintains it, and keep that person’s number rather than relying only on reception. A multi-day rate is only a saving if you will ride on those days. Take a car or included transfer for an airport arrival, a long evening or a boat day, and start the scooter rental when you are ready to use it.

The rental agreement does not establish your licence

Driving entitlement depends on your documents and the vehicle, not a rental shop’s informal assurance.

For UK licence holders, government advice requires the 1968 IDP together with the UK licence. The US State Department says US licences and US-issued IDPs do not work in Vietnam. These are different cases: ‘bring any international licence’ is not a reliable rule. The entitlement must cover the vehicle you will ride; a car-only licence does not become motorcycle entitlement because the rental is called a scooter.

Arrange the appropriate documentation before the holiday and read the riding terms of your travel insurance separately. A vehicle’s insurance and your personal riding cover are different things. If the documents do not work for the vehicle, use a car, bus or driver for the coastal day. That choice preserves the same beaches and cafés without turning a short holiday into a licensing experiment.

Spend the first ten minutes beside the bike

The most useful inspection happens with the supplier present, before the first road journey.

Photograph both sides, the mirrors, body scratches, tyres, dashboard and fuel level. Test the brakes, lights, indicators, horn and steering with the supplier, and ask for a replacement if the bike does not feel right. Look at the helmet’s fit and fastening rather than accepting one that slides around simply because it was supplied. Set the mirrors before leaving, not while threading through town traffic.

Record the registration details and ask which vehicle documents are supplied for use on the road. Write down the deposit amount, refund process and damage terms, including how pre-existing marks are recorded. Do not leave your passport as the rental deposit. If the arrangement depends on an unclear damage charge or a bike with a known defect, the convenient hotel delivery is not a reason to accept it.

Build a ride around one coast

Short linked stops make better scooter days than an island-wide race.

From a central base, an Ông Lang outing can be enough: breakfast, one beach access point and a long café stop before returning. A Cửa Cạn extension is a choice, not a requirement. In the south, keep An Thới, Khem and Sunset Town together. Do not combine a morning far north with an evening far south just because a scooter offers apparent freedom from a timetable.

A paved road in the Khem area; island approaches vary beyond the main roads.Phu Quoc Times photo library

The main road and the last approach are different surfaces and different driving tasks. A paved Khem road in our photo library does not describe every path into a beach or village. Avoid following a navigation shortcut down an unsuitable track simply to save a few minutes. Stop somewhere safe to look at the route and ask the destination about its road entrance. A resort’s beach access can be completely separate from its road reception.

Fuel, parking and the return to your base

Fill before a longer outing and keep the final ride short enough to enjoy it.

Photograph the starting fuel gauge and agree how much to return. Refuel on the established road before heading into a quieter coastal area rather than waiting until the warning appears. Ask the hotel where the bike can remain overnight and where it should be handed back. At a beach or attraction, use the designated parking area and keep the ticket or receipt when one is issued.

Do not lock the helmet or shopping where it interferes with control of the bike. Keep a dry bag for the phone and a place to stop if rain starts; handling navigation on the move is not a useful way to save time. Plan a daylight return from unfamiliar access roads. If dinner will involve alcohol, leave the rental parked and take a car, then collect it on a separate sober journey rather than making the whole evening revolve around getting the bike home.

Know who comes if the bike stops

Breakdown cover is useful only when you know the contact, area and cost arrangement.

Ask whether a puncture is your cost, whether the supplier brings a replacement and which places are outside its collection area. Save a contact number before riding away. If a fault develops, stop using the bike, send the location and photograph the issue; do not approve an expensive repair in the owner’s name without an agreed process. Keep the damaged or replaced parts record if a repair is authorised.

A rental is not a commitment to ride whatever the day brings. Heavy rain, a poor helmet, a fault or a long late return can change the sensible mode. Tell the supplier if you will leave the bike at the hotel and take a car instead, especially near the return deadline. On handback, compare the condition photographs, close out the fuel and overtime and get the deposit settled while both parties are present.

Frequently asked questions

Questions worth resolving before choosing the vehicle.

How much should I budget for scooter rental?

Our originals use about 150,000 VND a day for an ordinary automatic and 200,000 VND or more for a newer model. Use those as planning figures and obtain the actual model, hours, delivery and deposit quote for your dates.

Does a car licence let me rent and ride an automatic scooter?

Do not assume so. The driving entitlement must cover that vehicle in Vietnam. A supplier handing over the keys does not validate the licence, and an automatic transmission does not remove the motorcycle licensing question.

Is Phu Quoc a good place to learn to ride?

No. Learn and gain experience before the holiday. A quiet-looking stretch does not remove junctions, mixed traffic or the road back after dark. Use a car or bus while keeping the same beach and café plan.

Should I leave my passport as the deposit?

No. Agree another documented deposit arrangement and the refund process. Keep a receipt and record the bike’s existing condition so the deposit discussion has a clear starting point.

Should I rent for the whole holiday?

Only if you will use it. Airport, boat-tour and full theme-park days often need transfers rather than a parked rental. Count the actual riding days and compare with the multi-day offer.

What should I agree about punctures or breakdowns?

Who pays, who authorises repairs, whether a replacement comes and where collection is available. Save the supplier’s direct number. Stop using a faulty vehicle and send the location instead of continuing to the next attraction.
