Phu Quoc Etiquette, Customs & Rules: The Useful Details

A morning market, a family shrine and a resort restaurant do not run by the same unwritten rules. The useful skill is knowing which part of island life you are entering, then asking a clear question before money or a photograph makes it awkward.

Keep border rules separate from everyday etiquette. Carry medicine documents, declare cash above the applicable threshold, leave vapes at home and check official drone restrictions. At temples cover shoulders and knees; at markets agree the item, unit and preparation before bargaining over the total.

A practical decision

What belongs in the customs conversation

An island holiday still crosses a national border when you arrive from overseas.

Keep prescription medicine in its original packaging with the prescription and any supporting doctor’s letter. Controlled medicines need an advance check for the actual substance and quantity: an overseas prescription alone does not establish what you may bring into Vietnam. Resolve that with the Vietnamese authority before departure, then keep the documents with the medicine for the border journey.

Cash declaration thresholds are different from spending limits. UK government entry guidance lists amounts over USD 5,000 or equivalent foreign currency, or over VND 15 million. The rule concerns cash carried across the border, not the balance in a bank account. If leaving with more than the threshold, the supporting documentation matters too. Use the declaration process rather than dividing an uncertain amount among bags and hoping it will not be noticed.

Vapes and drugs are not a holiday exception

Do not bring vapes or related products into Vietnam.

Current UK government guidance states that vapes and related products are banned, including bringing them into the country. A product being legal where you live does not make it legal in Vietnam. Clear this out of the packing list rather than relying on a hotel shop, another visitor’s experience or an old social-media post.

Avoid recreational drugs and unfamiliar substances offered through nightlife or street contacts. Keep an eye on drinks, use a venue you can identify again and arrange the ride home independently. If a problem becomes medical, use the health and emergency page rather than treating it as something to hide until morning. Legal rules and the need for urgent care are separate decisions.

A beach view is not permission to fly

Check the aircraft rules and restricted airspace for the exact flight area.

Phú Quốc has an airport, defence-sensitive locations and busy visitor areas; an apparently empty shoreline is not evidence of unrestricted airspace. The Ministry of Defence publishes its restricted/no-fly map at cambay.mod.gov.vn, linked by the Government’s drone guidance. Examine the intended flight area and the current permission process for your aircraft and operation. Do not use a universal claim that every drone is exempt, or that every flight follows the same permit rule.

The hotel’s permission to film on its grounds does not authorise aviation activity. Keep ordinary photography clear of military sites, security operations and areas displaying restrictions. At a temple, performance or private business, ask about camera and video rules before setting up a tripod. Aerial footage can wait; a good island photograph can come from a viewpoint you are already entitled to use.

Dinh Cậu and Gành Dầu: visiting a place people use

Treat an active place of worship as more than a photo stop.

At Dinh Cậu, combine a waterfront stroll with the visit, but keep beach clothing for the beach. Cover shoulders and knees before entering worship areas, follow shoe and photography signs and leave the doorway clear for people arriving to pray. A light overshirt is easier than searching for a cover-up at the entrance. The same courtesy belongs at Nguyễn Trung Trực Temple in Gành Dầu and at Hộ Quốc Pagoda.

Do not move offerings, step into a ceremony for a better angle or pose on objects used for worship. Ask before photographing a person closely, especially while they are praying. If you do not understand a ritual, observing quietly is a complete visit. You do not need to perform a ceremony or buy an offering simply because someone else does.

Bargain after you know what is being sold

A seafood price without a unit and cooking charge is not yet a meal price.

Dương Đông market in the morning is a working food market. Keep paths and stall fronts clear, ask before a close photograph and avoid handling produce without invitation. Some sellers negotiate; a fixed-price menu or labelled shop is a different setting. If a quoted price does not suit, decline politely and move on. Starting a theatrical argument over a small purchase rarely improves the day for either side.

For seafood, name the species, ask whether the price is per kilogram, per 100 grams, per animal or per serving, and agree on preparation. Watch the weighing if weight determines the bill. Ask whether cooking, accompaniments and service charges are separate. Write the agreed amount in a message or have it shown on the menu. This is useful precision, not an invitation to suspect every seller.

  • Species and price unit; see the weight if billed by weight.
  • Cooking, accompaniments and any separate charges.
  • Agreed total before preparation.

Tips, photographs and ordinary courtesy

Keep a tip voluntary and agree paid work before it begins.

A tip can thank someone for good service, but it should not become a surprise compulsory charge after the meal. Read any service-charge line on the bill; it is a separate matter from choosing to leave a tip. For a guide, boat crew or driver, decide what you want to give after understanding what the booked price already covered. Do not hand money to children in exchange for photographs.

In a fishing village, nets, baskets, boats and doorsteps are somebody’s equipment and living space. Ask to photograph people at close range, move when work needs the path and pay for any service you requested. A friendly conversation is often the most interesting part of the visit, but nobody owes a performance of local life. Buy the tea or meal you want and let the place continue its day.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to decisions that commonly need confirmation before travel.

How much cash must be declared at the border?

UK government guidance lists over USD 5,000 or equivalent foreign currency, or over VND 15 million. This is a declaration threshold for cash, not a limit on your bank balance. Departure above the threshold also requires the relevant supporting documents.

Can I bring my vape to Phu Quoc?

No. Current government travel guidance states that vapes and related products are banned, including import by visitors. Leave them out of the luggage rather than relying on an old traveller’s account.

Is hotel permission enough to fly a drone?

No. Property consent and aviation rules are different. Check the Ministry of Defence’s published restricted-airspace map and the current requirements for the aircraft and intended operation.

What should I wear at Dinh Cậu?

Cover shoulders and knees for the worship area and follow the signs on footwear and photography. Bring a light overshirt if combining the visit with the beach or a waterfront walk.

Should I bargain over a seafood price?

First establish the species, unit, weight and cooking charge. Then ask politely if negotiation is appropriate. A lower headline number is not a saving when it refers to a different portion or excludes preparation.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

They are different. Read the stated bill charge, then choose whether to add a voluntary tip. A guide, driver or restaurant should explain agreed charges independently of any optional thank-you.
